Shimano 23 Talica II Game Fishing Reel

The Shimano 23 Talica II Speed is back with a facelift and some new tech to boot. The Shimano Talica II Game Fishing Reel is a cashable high-speed lever drag reel that has become very popular due to its size, weight, strength, and high line capacity. The one-piece cold-forged aluminium frame has cutting-edge corrosion protection on the outside and features other waterproofing technologies to protect the inside. The Talica is the best Shimano have to offer game fishers around the globe, they're super slick and smooth and a treat to use. The new key technical features of this reel are the Dual Drag System, InfinityDrive, and X Protect.

Dual Drag System & Infinity Drive - typically the pinion gear ball bearing rotation gets heavier in proportion to the drag force from the side load of drag pressure. The Dual Drag construction produces more drag friction, which in turn significantly reduces side load compared to a standard single drag system at the same drag pressure. The result: rotation becomes lighter at the same drag force.

X Protect - X Protect is all about protecting the internals of the reel, in particular the drive gear and the pinion ball bearing, which Shimano achieves by creating a structural labyrinth and adding grease to greatly reduce saltwater penetration.

Clicker Upgrade - A common issue with the clicker in the older Shimano Talica model is that it would get stuck due to salt build-up and corrosion, but Shimano have circumvented this issue in the new Talica models by adding an additional insert between the frame and the SUS pawl.

Rod Clamp Design - The two bolts and the rod clamp design have been changed in the new Talicas to minimise saltwater corrosion and the possibility of snapping the bolts.

Line Pin - A very small and unintrusive pin has been added to the spools so that line can be tied off to it to eliminate line slippage and remove the need for backing when using braid.

Aesthetics - Aesthetically speaking the changes are subtle, Shimano has used their light XTR grey frame and side plate offset with the gold spool body that is synonymous with the Talica range. Upon close inspection, you will see a change to the detailing on the drag lever and cam areas of the reel. The reel itself is 4.5mm shorter on the side closest to your handle, giving it a more compact look. Additionally, Shimano has switched the traditional Philips head side plate screws with Torx screws, which improves the seamless look of the Talica as well as the functionality of removing screws for those of you inclined to DIY tinkering, maintenance and repair.
